Police are warning shoppers in Chesterfield town centre to beware of a gang of sneaky pickpockets who have been targeting the elderly and vulnerable.
flexible lightThe cowardly offenders stole from five women around the Market Place, Vicar Lane and Burlington Street in one day and escaped with their purses and cash.
Officers revealed how the latest crimewave follows a similar spate four months ago when thieves stole property from six victims' handbags in the Market Place within a week and targeted sat-nav systems in parked cars.
Pc Julie Slone, Chesterfield town centre beat manager, said: "We put out warnings about pickpockets about four months ago and things calmed down but the problem has come back."
During the latest spate five women, including elderly females, had their purses and cash stolen from their Monogram Mini Lin Fake Handbags handbags during lunchtime, on Thursday, January 18.
Police are warning shoppers to keep their handbags close and in sight, zip and button them up, do not carry large amounts of money or valuable property, keep pockets sealed and be vigilant.
Pc Slone added: "Unfortunately, these victims did not realise something had been stolen until they tried to buy something later on and spotted their purses and cash gone so we don't have any descriptions of the offenders.
"They could be a gang and appear to be operating on busy Thursday afternoons when the flea market is up and running and attracts more people including elderly residents."
